January is a great time to travel because not only the flights and accommodations are cheaper but also many destinations are less crowded allowing you to enjoy the places to their fullest.

So, grab your jacket or your flip-flops and let's dive into the awesomeness that the USA has in store for your January adventures!

Arches National Park, UT

By Jamie of Photojeepers

Are you looking for one of the best places to visit in the USA in January? If so then you can’t beat a trip to Arches National Park in Moab, Utah. Not only do the park’s many sandstone arches look stunning when coated in a fine layer of snow, but crowds are minimal and temperatures are more pleasant than during the summer.

Therefore, January in Arches means that you can save money on both flights and hotels. Just be sure to book a ticket to the nearest International airport, which is in Salt Lake City. From here, you’ll need to rent a car so that you can travel a little over 3.5 hours to the park.

Once here, check into the Holiday Inn Express in Moab. The rooms are nice and come outfitted with private bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. However, the real draw of staying here is that you are only around 11 miles away from the park.

However, do bundle up and be prepared for the cold since daily highs are only around 41 F while daily lows dip down to 18 F. Also, don’t worry too much about snow though since the area really only receives light dustings.

Now, if you plan to do epic hikes like the hike to Delicate Arch for sunset, do wear shoes with great traction since the trails can get slippery. Luckily, though, much of Arches remains open in January. So, you won’t have a problem exploring local highlights like Devil’s Garden, Landscape Arch, Balanced Rock, and more. You can also do some amazing stargazing after dark since the skies have very little light pollution.

Just remember that winter means fewer hours of daylight. So, if you love hiking, be sure to get up with the sun so that you can make the most of your day.

Zion National Park, UT

By Catherine from Day Trip Nomad

Zion National Park is one of the most popular parks in the United States, recently attracting over 5 million people per year. Located in southern Utah, the appeal of its monoliths and mesas transcends seasons, as its mild winters make it a good year-round park. January stands out as one of the rare months that comes without crowds or the use of the mandatory shuttle system.

Hiking trails like Angel's Landing and The Narrows, which are usually crowded with tourists during peak season, are practically empty in January. Since you'll need a permit beforehand for Angel's Landing, you'll have a much better chance of getting permission to go in this month.

Because day trips to Zion National Park are so popular, the park service has set up a shuttle system to cut down on car traffic in the main canyon area. These shuttles run regularly from March through November, on weekends in February, and the last week in December. In January, you don't have to take the shuttle at all, so you can drive your own car down the scenic roads of Zion at your own pace.

The weather in Zion National Park in January can be quite variable, with average high temperatures around 53F and lows around 30F. You might catch a rare snowy winter day that only happens 2 - 3 times a year, which blankets the red rock with a beautiful white coating. Most of the time, however, you'll be greeted with sunny and clear skies.

Clearwater, FL

by Candice, Exploring the Gulf

Florida always provides a lovely tropical escape to run off to during the cold winter months. And Clearwater is one of the most picture-perfect places to visit in the USA in January. Though there might be an influx in crowds, with straggling tourists ringing in the new year and snowbirds settling in for the winter, the lively atmosphere and climate can’t be beat!

Clearwater in January brings the city’s coldest temperatures of the year, typically peaking in the mid-60s, with lows dipping into the mid-50s. But it’s definitely warmer than most places in the US in January!

Though Florida is known to be a relatively rainy state, January tends to be one of the driest months in Clearwater, so you won’t have to worry about dodging too many storms this month.

Clearwater is famously known for its beach and all the surrounding water activities. In January, the sea temperature lingers around 64°F, which is too cold for most visitors to enjoy the water. Those who opt to stay out of the water can still enjoy lounging on the beach or flying a kite.

There’s always fishing and other beachtime fun to be had at Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach as well. The area comes alive with live music and family-friendly activities each evening, making for the perfect way to enjoy the sunset.

The aquarium in town is a wonderful place to explore if you’re looking for some indoor fun. A visit to the nearby Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks makes for a unique and memorable experience if you’re looking to escape town for an afternoon.

With comfortable temperatures, beautiful Gulf Coast views, and so many fun things to do, Clearwater is an excellent place to visit in the USA in January.

Pensacola, FL

by Rachel the Caribbean uncovered

When the holidays are over and the winter cold starts to set in, escape to Pensacola, Florida, where the snowbirds flock for sunshine and warmer days! Located in Florida's panhandle, Pensacola averages 60°F in January and has recently seen just 4 inches of rain throughout the month. January does get quite crowded in Pensacola, as this is peak season, but you do see a slight decrease in visitors after the holidays and before the spring breakers arrive.

Why visit Pensacola in January? It's not the Caribbean, so it's a bit too cold to go swimming, but the sun's still shining and there are plenty of outdoor activities to take advantage of. Head to the famous Pensacola Pier to fish and simply spot the huge variety of marine life from above. I've seen small sharks, sea turtles, tarpons, and more. The weather is perfect for hanging at the pier (a budget-friendly activity, conveniently) and spending some time in the sand.

When you're done at the pier, take advantage of Pensacola's hiking trails, state parks, kayaking trips, and historic downtown. January is truly the perfect time for these activities since you won't end up sweating the day away like you might in July and August.

Another fan favorite is making your way to the Florida Bama, the spot where Florida and Alabama meet. There are bars, restaurants, and plenty of rentals in the area. On a rainy day, you can check out the boutiques, malls, and antique shops in downtown Pensacola for unique handmade souvenirs.

If you're not a fan of the snow, but also not one to sit on the beach all day, Pensacola is the perfect January vacation for you!

St. Augustine, FL

Recommended by Cate from Intentional Traveling

One of the best places to visit in the USA in January is sunny St. Augustine, Florida.

Founded in 1565, St. Augustine is known as the oldest town in America. During the day, you can explore the historic fort, Castillo de San Marcos, climb the St. Augustine lighthouse, and relax at one of its beautiful beaches. You also can enjoy a stroll down the oldest street in America as well as the historic St. George Street, which is lined with many shops and restaurants.

My favorite shop in St. Augustine is Two Sparrows (a lovely home and clothing boutique), and some of our favorite restaurants are The Floridian (lunch) and Collage (formal, perfect for a romantic dinner).

St. Augustine also offers a number of charming historic bed and breakfasts. We would recommend choosing one in the historic downtown area so that you can easily walk to the most popular streets, restaurants, and sights.

Additionally, every year in December and January, St. Augustine hosts its annual Nights of Lights display in its historic downtown area with over 3,000,000 lights. Shops, restaurants, historic sites, museums, trees, and bed and breakfasts are all adorned with lights. It is one of the best Christmas light displays to see in the US!

You can walk through the spectacular light display for free. The lights will be displayed every night from November 18, 2023, to January 31, 2024.

The weather in St. Augustine in January is typically in the mid-60s. While the weather in January may be a bit chilly for swimming at the beach, it is perfect for walking around outside and exploring St. Augustine’s charming historic district.

If you are looking for a warm(er) weekend getaway in January, St. Augustine is the perfect place to visit.

Psst: St Augustine is part of my Florida road trip itinerary, the road trip also takes you to the Florida keys.

Orlando, FL

by Haley from Gleason Family Travels

Traveling to Orlando in January is more than just a trip to a city with theme parks. Visiting Orlando this time of year is a perfect vacation location for families, solo travelers, and couples.

The weather during this month is a fantastic escape from the harsh winter or intense heat found in many parts of the world this time of year. With temperatures in the 60s and 70s, it's the perfect backdrop for exploring and enjoying outdoor activities.

The real allure of Orlando in January, however, lies in its world-famous theme parks. January is a dream for visitors to Disney World and Universal Studios, as the post-holiday period sees significantly fewer crowds.

You can wander around the theme parks, hop on rides with minimal wait times, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere without the usual throngs of people. It is the perfect opportunity to experience these iconic attractions in a more relaxed and less chaotic setting.

Disney World in January is particularly special, often hosting the Epcot International Festival of the Arts. Families can enjoy delicious food, eye-catching artwork, and live performances, all within the park. Universal Studios, not to be outdone, kicks off its Mardi Gras celebrations towards the end of the month.  This event brings a slice of New Orleans to Orlando, complete with family-friendly parades, live music, and festive decorations.

Beyond the parks, Orlando is brimming with January activities and events. The city hosts various cultural events and outdoor markets, perfect for travelers looking to explore local life. The Orlando Science Center and local art galleries are both great options for those looking for activities outside of the famous theme parks.

Don’t overlook Orlando for your January vacation. It is the perfect time for vacationers to immerse themselves in the incredible atmosphere of the city.

Fort Lauderdale, FL

By Megan from Florida Wanderers

Do the winter blues have you down? Not sure where you should travel to in the States, but in desperate need of a winter escape? If you are looking for a special place to visit in the USA in January, look no further than Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It is the perfect winter escape, as the only thing white you will see here are the sandy beaches.

Who doesn’t want to visit a warm beach in the middle of winter? Fort Lauderdale is the perfect spot to come visit warm up for a change. Here you can expect average temperatures to be in the mid 70’s. What is even more exciting is the average sea temperature is also in the mid 70’s, so you can plan on spending all your days at the beach.

The weather is just perfect this time a year, and you will see because everyone else agrees and is escaping to Florida to avoid winter. The sunshine state does tend to get crowded this time of year, which is why I prefer Fort Lauderdale over Miami.

Fort Lauderdale has all the same amenities and appeal as Miami, it is just more affordable and a little less run with crowds in the winter months. Come and enjoy the beach, pickleball, tennis or whatever outdoor sport you are normally missing in winter. Fort Lauderdale has it.

So whether you are looking for a romantic getaway in Florida or just looking to warm your chilled bones, Fort Lauderdale is the perfect winter escape.

Oceanside, CA

Recommended by Trijit Mallick from Cheap Travel Trail

Oceanside, California, stands out as one of the most captivating destinations in the USA, especially in January. Renowned as one of the cheapest beach towns in California, Oceanside offers a unique charm that beckons travellers to seek a delightful escape without breaking the bank.

One of the key reasons Oceanside is special to visit in January is its mild and pleasant weather. Unlike many parts of the country experiencing the chill of winter, Oceanside boasts a temperate climate with daytime temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to low 70s Fahrenheit (18-23°C). This makes it an ideal spot for those looking to escape the winter blues and enjoy some sun-soaked relaxation.

While January may not bring the summer crowds, it offers a more tranquil and intimate experience. The beaches are less populated, providing an opportunity to stroll along the sandy shores or engage in water activities without the hustle and bustle of peak tourist season.

While fall foliage is not a prominent feature in Oceanside during January, the coastal landscape offers its own kind of beauty. The ocean views are stunning, and the Pacific breezes add a refreshing touch to the experience. Additionally, January marks the beginning of the California gray whale migration season, offering a chance to witness these majestic creatures as they make their way along the coast.

For those looking to immerse themselves in local culture, January in Oceanside brings the Sunset Market. Held every Thursday evening, this vibrant market features a diverse array of stalls offering fresh produce, artisanal crafts, live music, and delectable street food. It's a fantastic way to experience the community spirit and indulge in some local delights.

Redwoods, CA

Recommended by Melissa from Miss Rover

The Redwoods are magical year-round, but January in Northern California is incredibly special for many reasons. Winter and early Spring is when you are more likely to experience light rays shining through the Redwood forests because of the angle of the sun this time of year. If you get the right weather conditions, this is truly spectacular. Another great reason to visit the Redwoods in January is that the crowds are significantly less, and no permits are needed for Fern Canyon.

The weather stays mild even throughout January, with highs in the 50’s (Fahrenheit) and lows in the high 30’s. It does rain frequently in this area, but if you’re hiking under the Redwood forest canopy, you might not even notice! You will likely find plenty of open parking spaces and even have long stretches of trail to yourself in January. The crowds are very minimal this time of year which is such a bonus as Summer can be quite crowded.

Check out the Avenue of the Giants scenic drive and Founders Grove hike in the southern part of the Redwoods. In the central region of the Redwoods, stop at the Redwood Skywalk, and Fern Canyon, and go elk viewing at the Orick Visitors Center. In the Northernmost Redwoods, check out Howland Hill Road, Damnation Creek Trail and Simpson Reed Trail in Jedediah Smith State Park.

These activities would be ideally seen in a 3-5 day trip while staying in Arcata and/or Crescent City California. Camping is available year-round in this area if you’re wanting to really soak up your time with the tallest trees in the world or travel on a budget

Joshua Tree, CA

by Kyra Heenan from Sea to Sequoia

January is an especially great time to visit Joshua Tree, as you won’t have to deal with heavy crowds. The busy season is from March through May when the weather is warm. The park also typically sees an uptick in visitors around the holidays. Visit during the lull in between these times, and you’ll have more of the magical park to yourself!

The best way to explore Joshua Tree National Park is through hiking. Thankfully, there is an abundance of trails for all skill levels. One of the best trails in Joshua Tree is Hidden Valley Nature Trail, an easy one-mile loop that takes you through a natural valley formed by giant rock formations. You’ll see desert plants and massive boulders, and can even explore some small caves.

While you’re visiting, you also can’t miss Arch Rock Nature Trail, a short and easy trail that leads to one of the most iconic rock formations in the park. For those looking for more of a challenge, Ryan Mountain Trail is a great option. This out-and-back trail is just under three miles long. It takes you to the peak of the mountain, where you’ll get stunning views of the park and beyond.

One other attraction in the park that can’t be missed is the Cholla Cactus Garden. This natural “garden” is heavily concentrated with these desert plants, which have semi-translucent needles. During sunrise and sunset (which are especially beautiful in the winter!), the needles glow in the golden hour sun.

While the weather in January is on the chillier side for the area (you can expect temperatures to range in the high 50s to low 60s during the day), it’s still mild enough that you can comfortably explore outdoors. Just be sure to bring some layers, especially if you plan on being outside before sunrise or after sunset.

Los Angeles, CA

by Mayuri from fernwehrahee

California is generally considered a round-the-year destination and Los Angeles is included in it! Temperatures remain relatively mild in other parts of the USA! It ranges from 13-18°C makes it perfect for exploration!

Also, January is considered part of the off-peak season in Los Angeles. This means fewer crowds at popular attractions and cheaper Prices on accommodations. But make sure to start your day early as days are shorter in January!

There are tons of things to do in Los Angeles in January! Reserve your day to visit the iconic Hollywood area! You can visit Warner Brothers studio; Hollywood sign and Hollywood Walk of Fame to spot your favourite celebrity star!

Also, make sure to check out the Beverly Hills area which is known for wealthy people's houses! Later, do window shopping at Rodeo Drive, an expensive street in Los Angeles! In the evening, visit the LCMA (Los Angeles Museum of Art) for its display known as “Urban Lights”. Also, reserve your day to explore Universal Studios in Hollywood! San Francisco, CA

by Alisha from Travel Today Work Tomorrow

San Francisco in January is a wonderful time to visit this bucket list destination. January reveals a slower-paced side of the city, with cool, crisp air and fewer crowds. This quieter month in the Bay Area allows you to explore the city's famous landmarks and hidden gems, away from the bustling summer months. Also, during this time of year, you will find cheaper accommodations and many fun events, including the SF Sketchfest.

From the historic neighborhoods to the breathtaking vistas, San Francisco offers a plethora of things to do throughout the year. Some things not to miss on your visit are walking or biking the Golden Gate Bridge, a visit to Alcatraz Island, the notorious former prison, a ride on the famous cable cars, or enjoying a memorable dinner at the Foreign Cinema. This popular restaurant features classic and contemporary films projected on a screen outside on their enchanting patio.

There are a few events and festivals you can look out for in January. The SF Sketchfest is a comedy festival held for two weeks at different venues throughout the Bay Area. The festival showcases a diverse array of performances by well-known comedians. Also, in January is the Martin Luther King, Jr. March and Festival, free admission days at numerous museums, or you can catch a Warrior Basketball game at the brand new Chase Center.

Visiting San Francisco in January, you can expect mild but chilly weather ranging from the mid-40s to mid-50s degrees Fahrenheit. You also may experience some rainfall. However, despite the chill, most days are clear providing stunning views of the bay and the city's iconic skyline.

Charleston, SC

by Joren from Lor & Jor Explore

With its cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and iconic palm trees, Charleston is full of Southern charm. And during winter you can expect all the same appeal as busier months with milder temperatures and thinner crowds. As a coastal destination, Charleston is known for its beaches and ocean access. But the cooler weather doesn't mean you can't enjoy time on the water around the "Holy City".

A personal favorite for a relaxing stroll and wildlife viewing is Shem Creek Boardwalk. When you're done stretching your legs, grab a table right along the waterfront and enjoy some fresh seafood while watching dolphins leap out of the water.

January is also a great time to bypass crowds and visit one of Charleston's most significant historic sites, Fort Sumter. To see where the American Civil War's first shots were fired you'll board a tour boat for a 30-minute cruise. Once you arrive you can walk through the fort and even see mortar rounds still embedded in its walls.

Charleston has a vibrant food scene and as you make your way through the walkable and historic city center, you can enjoy special menus and discounts during Restaurant Week. January is the peak season for oysters, culminating in the Lowcountry Oyster Festival, usually held the last week of the month or early February.

Once you've had your fill of world-class seafood, be sure to enjoy a stroll along The Battery, a historic defensive seawall, as you make your way past colorful antebellum houses on Rainbow Row. You can also easily stop by other popular attractions along the route, like the Pineapple Fountain and White Point Garden.

With all the walking you'll be grateful for average temperatures in the upper 50s (about 15° C) and the occasional cloudy skies. The off-season weather is much more tolerable than the hot and humid days of summer, making Charleston an ideal getaway at the beginning of the year.

New York City, NY

by Soline from On the Road Diary

When winter reaches its peak in January, only a few cities are still bustling and full of life. New York City is definitely one of them, offering plenty of fun activities to indulge in.

From ice skating at Rockefeller Center, seeing Central Park under the snow or getting cheap tickets to a musical, there's no shortage of winter activities.

Many people visit New York City at Christmas, to witness it under the snow or appreciate all of its winter fun. However, January offers the same kind of experience, with fewer tourists and much lower prices. Temperatures range from 26°F to 39°F, and it usually snows a few months.

There are many festivities happening in the Big Apple during the month of January. The Jazz Festival and the Asian Festival start at the beginning of the month. Many festive shows are still on until mid-January, such as the Holiday Train Show.

Everyone has to visit New York City at least once in their life, but not everyone can afford it. Visiting in January might be your best bet. Another money and time-saving tip is to plan an itinerary and choose a hotel in the best area to stay in New York accordingly.

Sedona, AZ

Submission by Kelsea and Nicholas of Out of Office Mindset

Visiting Sedona in January offers a colorful and serene trip, making it a special time to explore this iconic Arizona destination.

One of the main reasons January stands out is the mild and comfortable weather. While the rest of the country may be experiencing winter chill, Sedona enjoys daytime temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to the low 60s Fahrenheit, creating a pleasant atmosphere for outdoor activities, especially hiking.

One of the highlights of a January visit to Sedona is the absence of the usual crowds that can inundate the area during peak tourist seasons. Some restaurants that we previously couldn’t get a reservation for were available for dinner for our first time!

Hiking enthusiasts like us will find January to be an excellent time to explore the numerous trails that crisscross the region. The parking and trail pedestrian traffic around trails in January was much better than when we visited in the summer. With fewer visitors, we felt like we could really appreciate the stunning red rock landscapes and renowned formations, like Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock, and take our time exploring.
However, caution is advised as there may be patches of snow and ice, particularly in higher elevations. We really enjoyed hiking up to Devils Bridge in January, but were always cautious of our next step and wore proper hiking footwear.

For a more adventurous perspective, consider taking a Sedona helicopter tour during your visit. The clear winter skies provide optimal visibility, allowing you to witness Sedona's breathtaking landscapes from a new and exhilarating vantage point. Soaring above the red rocks, you'll gain a unique appreciation for the scale and beauty of the area.

Our personal experience visiting during this time left us refreshed by the peacefulness and natural beauty, making it a highly recommended season to explore this Arizona gem.

White Sands National Park, NM

by Kristen from Yonderlust Ramblings

If you’ve ever wanted to play amongst sand dunes in the middle of winter and enjoy those “beachy” vibes in the heart of the desert, then White Sands National Park is the ideal January destination!

Southern New Mexico’s White Sands National Park shines year-round, but January is an ideal time to visit for several reasons.  The more moderate and milder temperatures in January are welcoming in the heart of this desert region, as opposed to hotter summer months when temperatures can be excessive and dangerously hot.  The average daytime temperatures in January at White Sands hover in the mid-50 degrees Fahrenheit, the perfect conditions for enjoying the sunshine and outdoor activities of this unique National Park!  While White Sands does occasionally see snow in the winter, it is rarely significant, with an average snowfall of only a couple of inches a year.  On the other hand, White Sands averages almost 300 days of sunshine a year, which means your odds of enjoying a warm winter vacation outdoors are very good in January!

January is also an ideal time to visit to avoid the busiest months and the majority of crowds.  A winter visit to White Sands means fewer people, seclusion, and more space to enjoy the trails, backcountry campsites, and park activities, like sand sledding the dunes!  Bring your own disc, or rent one from the Visitor Center, and enjoy miles of uncongested dunes to sled down, perfect for visitors of all ages!  Other winter activities at White Sands include hiking its 5 park trails, which range in length from half a mile to 5 miles in roundtrip length. These trails also feature varying features and degrees of difficulty which accommodate a wide array of abilities and ages, from flat boardwalk trails to rugged backcountry treks over miles of isolated dunes.  January is also the perfect time to enjoy a crisp night of primitive camping, where you can bundle up and enjoy stellar desert sunsets and unobstructed night skies!

Kauai, HI

Riana from Teaspoon of Adventure

Kauai is one of the best places to visit in the USA in January. While much of the country is shivering or shovelling, those in Kauai are sunbathing, surfing and smiling about spending winter in a Hawaiian paradise!

Kauai, one of the four main islands of Hawaii, enjoys warm weather all year long. January sees an average high of 72F (22C) and an average low of 54F (12C), meaning you can comfortably explore outdoors in a t-shirt. While Kauai is known to get a lot of rain, January is actually one of the driest months on the island. And even if you do get a little rain, it only contributes to the lush greenery that makes Kauai such a beautiful place to visit.

Spend your time in Kauai exploring beaches, jungles, waterfalls and mountains. Drive through the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, Waimea Canyon, where you’ll see incredible views of the valley and ocean below, or cruise along the Na’Pali Coast.

Beach hop on the South Shore at famous beaches like Poipu Beach or check out the sand on the North Shore at spots like Hanalei Beach. Get off the beaten path at Makauwahi Cave Reserve, discover waterfalls in Wailua, and make time for a luau feast.

Many people come to Kauai for the Christmas holidays, meaning the island is a lot less crowded by January. My family and I visited Kauai in January 2022 and didn’t find it very busy at all. We were blessed with a week of sunshine and had no problem finding space on the beach or going to restaurants without reservations.

I highly recommend Kauai as a stunning place to visit if you’re looking for a tropical retreat. Go in January to escape the winter blues and enjoy the island without huge crowds or rainstorms!

Maui, HI

Recommended by Lauren from The Traveling Moore

Maui Hawaii is the perfect place to visit in the USA in January to escape the colder weather in many continental US states. The average weather in January in Maui is around 70 degrees and sunny, which is my ideal temperature.

Another reason Maui is a great place to visit in January is the smaller crowds. Many people visit in December during school holiday breaks, so tourism really slows down. This means lower prices and more space at resorts.

One of my favorite things to do in Maui is relax at the beach and pool at my resort. My favorite resorts in Hawaii are in Wailea, an upscale beachy area. The beaches are white sand, the water is warm, and many of the resorts have great pools.

In addition to relaxing, Maui is the perfect place for outdoor adventures. One of the best things to do is drive the Road to Hana, where you will see scenic viewpoints, waterfalls, a black sand beach, and other beautiful locations. In Maui, I also recommend taking tours such as snorkelling, whale watching, and food tastings. There is truly something for everyone in Maui.

If you are planning to visit Maui in January, I recommend spending at least 7 days there. This will allow you enough time to see the most popular towns, such as Hana and Lahaina. It is also enough time to do 3-4 activities and still have plenty of time for relaxation.

Big Island, HI

by Lucy and Dan from Thoroughly Travel

Colloquially known as Big Island, the island of Hawai’i is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, which are located 2000 miles off the Pacific Coast of mainland USA. A tropical paradise, Hawaii is a popular vacation destination and one of the best places to visit in the USA in January.

January is the perfect time to visit Hawaii as the weather is dry and a pleasant 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 26°C). The east side of the island has a more tropical and humid climate, which lends itself to lush rainforests and thundering waterfalls. Rainbow Falls is not to be missed, while Akaka State Falls Park is so beautiful it actually feels like you've stepped into Avatar. The west side of the island is drier and home to sprawling beaches and upscale resorts. This is also the best place for wildlife lovers, who can enjoy snorkelling with turtles and manta rays. Winter is also whale season in Hawaii and humpbacks can be seen migrating along the coast.

The southern end of the Big Island is home to vast coastal landscapes, black sand beaches and one of only 4 green sand beaches in the world. It’s also home to the Volcanoes National Park, a large state park home to active volcanoes, steam vents and craters. Here you can also see petroglyphs and old indigenous rock carvings.

Hawaii Big Island is easily accessible by plane from most major US-based airports, as well as numerous global transit hubs. Kona and Hilo both have airports so you can fly into either side of the island. Many car hire companies serve these airports, or it is also possible to get around by using the Hele-On bus.

Oahu, HI

by Trysta L, Founder of This Travel Dream

With its warm temperatures, lush landscapes, and beautiful beaches, Oahu is a popular destination for travelers looking to escape the cold. Located in Hawaii, this island offers visitors a chance to relax, soak up the sun, and explore its unique culture.

To get to Oahu, you must fly into Honolulu International Airport. To make the most of your trip, we recommend renting a car to explore the island at your own pace.

The average temperature on Oahu in January is around 78°F, making it the perfect escape for those looking to enjoy sunshine and outdoor activities. Except for the first week of January, the island is less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience. You can also score some fantastic deals on accommodations and flights.

One of the must-see attractions on Oahu is Pearl Harbor, a historic site that tells the story of World War II. Visitors can take a self-guided tour or join one of the guided tours offered by local companies. Another popular activity on Oahu is relaxing on one of its many beautiful beaches. Waikiki Beach is a popular spot for surfers and sunbathers alike, while Lanikai Beach offers picturesque views of the Mokulua Islands plus perfect blue waters for swimming.

For a taste of Hawaiian culture, check out the Polynesian Cultural Center, where you can learn about traditional food, customs, and music from different Pacific Island nations. The Polynesian Cultural Center also has one of the best luaus on Oahu, where you can enjoy a delicious feast and watch traditional dance performances from the islands of Polynesia.

Nature lovers will also enjoy the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, a protected marine life conservation area with great snorkeling opportunities.

For those who love hiking, Oahu offers some of the best trails in Hawaii. One of the most popular is the Diamond Head Hike, which offers stunning views of Waikiki and Honolulu.

Washington D.C

by Josh Band from A Backpacker's World

One of the best places to visit in the USA in January is the country's capital, Washington D.C. Visiting Washington D.C. is like being in a real-life movie. Seeing the Capitol, the White House, the Supreme Court, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and all of the other sights is surreal. For many people, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and there's no better time to visit than in January.

The crowds are pretty low in January in Washington D.C. as it's outside of the peak travel season which is the summertime. This makes it much easier to book tours of the White House and the Capitol, and overall just makes your experience more enjoyable.

January has been named the "slowest month of the year for DC tourism" which puts people off coming, thinking it's a bad time to visit, but it's no worse than any other time of year. The only downside is the weather, as it gets pretty cold.

But don't let this put you off as many of the things to do in Washington D.C. are indoors. Aside from sightseeing, the best thing to do is to visit all of the museums. There are so many in the city, and the most popular are the Natural History Museum and the Air and Space Museum.

An added bonus of visiting D.C. is that you won't spend very much money. Pretty much everything is completely free to do, which is especially good in January after spending lots of money around the festive season.

All of the museums are owned by the Smithsonian Institutions, meaning entry is free of charge...even the zoo is free! Just make sure you check if you need to book a reservation. But again, in January, you don't need to book as far in advance.

There's no better time to visit Washington D.C. than in January!

Stowe is an ideal place to visit during January as it is a true winter wonderland. It is located on Vermont’s highest peak, Mount Mansfield. Magnificent mountains, breathtaking scenarios, an array of outdoor recreation, and the charm of a small town make Stowe a popular spot year-round, especially in winter.

Stowe successfully gained its reputation as one of Vermont's premier ski resorts and winter destinations. It has the first cross-country ski resort. This four-season destination has Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak, an ideal place for ski lovers.

Stowe Mountain Resort is between the two mountains, offering over 40 miles of ski terrain. It also features 30 km of backcountry trails and 45 km of groomed trails. All the equipment for skate skis, classic skis, snowboots, snowshoes, and poles for adults and children are available for rent. From the 17th to the 21st of January, it attracts LGBTQ+ riders, skiers, and winter enthusiasts into this town. Activities like Alpine skiing and snowboarding in Stowe Mountain Resort, cross-country skiing at Trapp Family Lodge, etc., attract people.

Stowe Winter Carnival is a popular event that marks its 50th year in 2024. It provides entertainment for people of all ages. From January 18th to 20th, there will be an ice carving competition, unique sports, and many more fun activities. There are Tipsy Tea events, wine-tasting events at Trapp Family Lodge, and other beautiful events.

An enormous crowd gathers at these events to attend all the fun activities. During January, the temperature stays between -8 to -11 degrees Celsius. Denver, Colorado’s Mile High City, is a stunning base camp for outdoor enthusiasts with plenty of hiking, skiing, and biking opportunities available in the neighboring mountain ranges. Travelers can go snowshoeing in the Rocky Mountain National Park or strap on their ice cleats to hike up Pikes Peak and Mount Evans.

Denver sees chillier temperatures in January, with an average high of 49 degrees Fahrenheit and lows in the 20s. An average of 6.5 inches of snowfall means that outdoor lovers will rejoice on the nearby slopes, and visitors should check out the resort at Arapahoe Basin for a classic skiing or snowboarding experience.

Fear the snow? Fret not! For indoor lovers, Denver has a vibrant art district and cozy music venues. While other cities shut down in the winter, Denver’s diverse cultural and restaurant scene comes alive, encouraging travelers to take a tour of the Coors Brewery and spend an afternoon at the Denver Art Museum.

January brings in the eagerly-awaited events of Winter Brew Fest – with hundreds of craft beer options and live music – and the National Western Stock Show – a livestock show offering rodeo shows, bull rides, and more.

Tourists tend to flock to Denver during the summer months for optimal camping and hiking opportunities, but January is a budget-friendly time to visit the city, and travelers will celebrate the lack of crowds at major attractions. With tons of indoor and outdoor activities available in Denver in January, Colorado’s electric capital is a perfect destination to cure the winter blues.

Savannah, GA

Suggested by Samantha Oppenheimer of Find Love and Travel

Known for its quintessential Southern charm, Savannah is a great location to take a trip in January.

Firstly, the temperatures usually range from 41°F to 60°F. So it will still be comfortable enough to walk around in. Just make sure to pack an extra layer or two to wear in the evenings.

Another great reason to visit is that hotel prices tend to be at their lowest, especially if you avoid visiting around New Year’s Eve. I recommend staying in Forsyth Park Inn. You’ll be overlooking Forsyth Park, and the inn itself has a cozy cabin feel that is perfect for the beginning of the year.

Savannah is also much quieter at this time of year, which means you can take advantage of the fewer crowds and visit the popular attractions.

As for attractions, visiting some of the historic homes is a must on any Savannah itinerary. The hop-on-hop-off trolley tour makes it very easy to see most of the top attractions. There are also plenty of ways to soak up the history of Savannah by stopping by the Cathedral Basilica of Saint John the Baptist and the museums.

To live more like a local, you can visit the all-year-round farmers' market or take nature walks in the state parks.

Depending on which time during January you visit, there are many events that you can take part in. If you’re there on the 1st of January, you can try a Tybee Polar Plunge, which is a cold swim at Tybee Island Pier. Additionally, they host a Dr. Martin Luther King Junior parade on January 15.

Also, Savannah, Georgia, has some of the best restaurants. The Old Pink House serves authentic Southern cuisine in a gorgeous colonial mansion!

Bozeman, MT

by Jen Ambrose & Ryan Victor from Montana Discovered

January… in Montana? You gotta be kidding, it’s like -100 there, right?

Winter in the Treasure State certainly gets a bit chilly, but with a little preparation, it can be an exciting winter wonderland, and there’s no better place to enjoy the snow than Bozeman.

Bozeman’s biggest draw is undoubtedly the skiing. Bridger Bowl is only 16 miles away and has over 2,000 acres of varied terrain that’ll challenge both beginners and experts. Lift tickets are relatively affordable, and it’s frequently referred to as “The best ski resort you’ve never heard of.” The better-known and more upscale Big Sky is about an hour from town and offers everything you’d expect of a world-class ski resort like Aspen or Vail - heated chairlifts, ski in-ski out condos, and as much apres-ski as skiing.

While nearby Yellowstone National Park mostly shuts down for the winter, a single road stays open, giving access to stunning cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. And after a big day of adventure, you can head out to Bozeman Hot Springs to soothe your tired muscles.

The town also sits at the epicentre of Montana’s craft beer revolution, with Bozeman breweries accounting for 10 out of the 100 or so in the state. For atmosphere, you can’t beat MAP Brewing, with its ski lodge aesthetic and incredible views of the Bridger Range. Then Mountains Walking comes in with a one-two punch of delicious wood-fire pizza and innovative IPAs, like their cannabis-inspired “Sky Flowers” line.

Montana’s tourism numbers have skyrocketed over the past few years, particularly in Bozeman, but almost all of those visitors arrive in the summer months. Winter is the perfect time to take advantage of smaller crowds and steeply discounted accommodations.

Las Vegas, NV

 By Alanna from Periodic Adventures

Las Vegas in Nevada is the perfect place to visit in January because the weather is much nicer in winter and crowd levels are at an all-time low. Not to mention few of the incredible Las Vegas attractions are seasonal, so you can enjoy almost everything year round! You can even find pool parties in January with special events like Winter Swim at Circa, a massive hot tub party.

Some of the best things to do on a Las Vegas itinerary include enjoying the Strip’s attractions like FlyOver, an immersive ride that transports you to destinations around the world, Mad Apple, a super fun variety show that combines Cirque du Soleil, comedy, and magic, and the Bellagio Fountains, a free water show that you can watch right off the sidewalk!

Not to mention, you’ll find some of the most delicious food and unique restaurants in Las Vegas like Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen, one of the many celebrity chef restaurants, or Le Cirque, which combines dinner with the ambiance of Cirque du Soleil.

Off the Strip, there’s a whole world to discover as well. OmegaMart is a must-do. This immersive experience takes you into another world where the fantastical comes to life via art installations. The Mob Museum is an underrated gem with truly so much to learn from both the mob side and the law enforcement side. Fremont Street is essential to Las Vegas since it was the original downtown. Catch the free light show nightly on the ceiling or even zipline through the entire length of the street!

Park MGM is a fantastic hotel to stay at as it’s near all the action on the Strip, is one of the only non-smoking hotels in Vegas, and has some incredible food on-site including Eataly, an Italian marketplace and restaurant!

Psst: If you are planning a bachelorette in the Sin City, I have the post for you!

Puerto Rico

by Eleanor from Elevate Your Escapes

Puerto Rico is a wonderful island in the Caribbean Sea, where you can enjoy the sun, the sea, and the culture. January is a good time to visit Puerto Rico because you can experience some of the best things the island has to offer, such as festivals, great weather, and nature with diverse and beautiful landscapes.

In January, Puerto Rico celebrates holidays and various events such as the Three Kings Day, the San Sebastian Street Festival, Ponce Carnival, the San Blas Marathon, the Casals Festival, and the Coffee Harvest Festival. Although this month is considered a peak month attracting a huge volume crowd, especially in the first two weeks, the island is big enough to accommodate all of the visitors. You can still find some peaceful and secluded places if you want to. The crowds also make the island livelier and more festive, and you can meet people from different backgrounds and countries.

If you are a nature lover, you will love the mountains, forests, waterfalls, caves, coral reefs, and beaches on this island. Plus, as a beautiful place that has a warm and sunny climate all year round, you get to enjoy various outdoor activities or visit some of the natural wonders such as the El Yunque Rainforest, the Bioluminescent Bay, and the Camuy River Cave Park.
